ON-GOING is our exhibition at The Australian Tapestry workshop. Showing between 10/8 - 27/10 2023.

The exhibition presents a selection of our works and the never-ending process that working with textiles offer. The many facets, endless challenges, surprises, adventures and always on-going. 

The Re Rag Rugs  (3 out of 12) Tailor, Off Pits and Confetti are represented along with embroidered, applique and sculptural works by Katarina Brieditis and Katarina Evans. 

 

Museum Acquisition

We are proud and delighted to share the news that the Musée des Arts Décoratif has acquired our rug Off Pist! 

MUSEUM ACQUISITION MUSÉE DES ARTS DÉCORATIFS Studio Brieditis & Evans, Off Piste, 2013/2015. Chain stitch tapestry made from recycled T-shirts. Cotton, 204 x 293 cm Galerie Maria Wettergren is delighted to announce that the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, has acquired the chain stitch rug Off Piste by Swedish textile artist duo, Studio Brieditis & Evans. This pioneering work, handmade from recycled cotton T-shirts, is now officially part of the French National Collections and is currently presented in the exhibition "Ten Years / Design. 10 Years of Acquisitions by the Cercle of Design" on show at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris from 23 June to 24 December 2022. STUDIO BRIEDITIS & EVANS Off Piste was part of Studio Brieditis & Evans' experimental Re Rag Rug project which began in 2012, exploring the social and ecological sustainability of the rug. Studio Brieditis & Evans' objective for this project was to make twelve different tapestries and rugs using various techniques with one thing in common: All of them were made from recycled textiles, such as cotton t-shirts, wool sweaters and tweed jackets. Since 2001, Katarina Brieditis and Katarina Evans have dedicated themselves to textile art with social and ethical dimensions. The idea of sustainability is key to Brieditis & Evans who through their mastery of craft, show how a traditionally common material can gain nobility and artistic value through exquisite craftsmanship, creating works and manual techniques that can be practiced by textile cultures without access to machines. 10-årsjubileum för Galleri Maria Wettergren i Paris

Den här hösten firar Galleri Maria Wettergren 10-årsjubileum. 

Det firas med nya lokaler i hjärtat av Saint-Germain-des-Près à Paris och utställningen Nouvelle Vague och en katalog med konstnärerna galleriet representerar.

Galerie Maria Wettergren is delighted to present you the digital publication Nouvelle Vague. Scandinavian Art & Design 1999 - 2020, a richly illustrated survey of contemporary Scandinavian milestone works that have contributed to redefining the international art and design scene over the past twenty years. Among the twenty-one artists included are Mathias Bengtsson, Ilkka Suppanen, Astrid Krogh, Grethe Sørensen, Cecilie Bendixen, Rasmus Fenhann and Tora Urup, whose works range from the most advanced technology to those inspired by traditional craftsmanship in the fields of limited edition furniture design, textile art, sculpture and lighting. While with a radical departure, these contemporary artists maintain a strong connection to their cultural roots, with references to the DNA of Scandinavian design. Their interdisciplinary research into possible expressions related to various materials and techniques seem to echo the Bauhaus school and the thinking of Walter Gropius: Architects, painters, sculptors, we must all return to crafts! For there is no such thing as “professional art”.

Nu i månadsskiftet mars-april visades Off Pist 3 av franska Galerie Maria Wettergren, på konstmässan PAD i Tuilerierna, Paris.

Vår matta, broderad av kasserade t-shirts,  hade ett fantastiskt fint sällskap av lampan Porcupine av Ilkka Suppanen, jaquarden Times Square in a rush 7 av Grethe Sørensen, verk av Gjertrud Hals, Ditte Hammerstrøm, Eske Rex m fl

Re Orient kvalitetsprov till Hong Kong

Off Pist till Lane Crawford, Hong Kong

Vi har fått ett uppdrag av Lane Crawford i Hong Kong. De vill ha en anpassad Off Pist-variant till en vägg i sin flagship store i finanscentret IFC building.

När vi var i Hong kong tidigare i våras var vi och kikade på platsen där den ska hänga, på en vägg intill en rulltrappa på varuhuset. Omringat av förföriskt, fantastiskt mode, vackert exponerat.

Just nu hade de samtidigt en tillfällig installation av design och konstplattformen Cocurata som visade upp sin kollektion EXTRACTION SS/15, av Bäst, Paul Insect och Rostarr, i utställningsform.

Vi hade ett möte med designavdelningen på huvudkontoret för att diskutera idéer och upplägg. Efter brevväxling ett par gånger sedan dess är det nu hög tid att sätta igång. Vi måste vara klara i mitten av augusti.

Ett nytt vitt blad

Äntligen vår och vi påbörjar ett nytt kapitel!

Alla våra 12 mattor har en egen historia. Vi skulle vilja att varje en av dem hittar olika vägar att förgrena sig på i vår rika textilvärld, hantverk spill och överskott. Vi har en tid arbetat med att reproducera dem, själva eller i samarbete med olika partners inom industrin.

Under 2014 lanserade vi vår egen reproduktion av Kasuri och Squeeze Me Hold Me på Handarbetets Vänner i Stockholm och på 100%design in London. Mattor och plädar gjorda av överskott från t-shirtindustrin i Indien, i samarbete med enskilda hantverkare i södra Indien och företaget Alpha Corporation i norr.
Med mattan Re Orient  utforskade vi möjligheten att producera lokalt. Vi samarbetade med Remakebolaget och mattan är gjord av t-shirts som slängts i Stockholm. 

2015 påbörjar vi eft nytt kapitel av Re Rag Rug Re-Produced. 

Först ut är en väggtextil till det välkända Stockholmskonditoriet ’Vetekatten’ som skall vara klar nu i juni. 

Vi arbetar också med att reproducera mattorna Off-Pist and Aquarelle för två olika beställare. Fortsättning följer här på bloggen.

We collected more woolens from Myrorna/Salvos this week. Washed and now drying on our back yard. 

FInally spring and a new white page.

Each of the 12 Re Rag Rugs have a story of their own. We would like each one of our 12 original rugs to find a different path in the rich world of textiles, craft, waste and excess and are working on ways to re-produce them. 

- Ourselves or in collaboration with partners in the textile industry.

In 2014 we launched Kasuri and Squeeze Me Hold Me at 100%design in London and Handarbetes Vänner in Stockholm. Rugs and covers made out of excess form the t-shirt industry in India, working with a small family in South of India and Alpha Corporation in the North.

With Re Orient we also explored the possibility to produce in locally out of Stockholmer’s wasted t-shirts in collaboration with Remakebolaget in Stockholm Sweden. 

2015 unfolds a new chapter for us in Re Rag Rug Re-Produced. 

Starting with a commission for the Stockholm landmark café ’Vetekatten’ we are designing and making custom made wall decorations for the coffee shop. Inauguration in June 2015.

We are also working on commission pieces of the rugs Off-Pist and Aquarelle. To be continued on the blogg.
