11.NOMAD

Tvisten i snodden håller därmed i kanternas annars lösa, korta ullgarnsbitar.

Mått: 150x 305 cm, Material: skurna stadkanter i ull, kläde, Teknik: trädning

Nomad, makes us think of a sheep skin, The combination of materials, colours and the simple technique gives the rya rug a look as out of nature

We were given a large box of wollen selvedges from Klippans yllefabrik in Latvia, waste from blanket weaving.
However the colours were difficult to combine with each other and we struggled with the task for one year.
This problem puts a light on the challenges of working with excess and waste - you can not order the colours you wish.

The selvedges were spun, with a crochet needle attached to a drill, into a rya yarn. By spinning the selvedges the short threads of wool are locked into each other and a steady yarn is the result.

In the end we found a way to enhance the ragged yarn into something more exclusive. We combined it with a flat felted fabric in which we made systematic incisions. By slipping, almost as making a running stitch, through the fabric we could create an design that is a free composition of herring bone and diamond twill.
